Can you tell me what these symptoms are Goldfish?
I have a large tank of 12 fancy goldfish. They recently had to sit about 4 at the bottom, you can feed and swim ok, but spend more time alone at the bottom. Another fish that gets into a corner, head down, tail up. The tail and a little below looks like its got red stripes? About a week ago I indtroduced four new fish to the tank, along with the water coming, and me about 3 weeks ago moved the bottom of the tank and had to completely empty and refill to do that. The most fish I've had no problem for a number of years.
The first thing I suggest is that you check the ammonia and nitrite level in the tank. Everything you describe is associated with ammonia or nitrite poisoning. If you do not have a test computer, you can take a sample of your water to your local pet store for testing. If ammonia or nitrite back, water changes as needed until the cycle is set and eliminates the problem for you. If ammonia and nitrites are 0 in the tank, then I'd say it's an internal infection. Red streaks in the fins are associated often with internal bacterial infections and lack of energy is a common symptom of the disease in general. The best treatment would be an internal infection. feed the fish with fish medicated food for bacterial infections (available in most pet stores, just be sure to get one infection of parasites) and 2. treat the tank with a good antibiotic. My first choice for internal infections or furans are Furanace 2. If these are not available tetracycline can be used (as Maracyn TC). Treatment only as directed on the package. Enter the medicated food for two weeks or more to make sure you clear any remaining infection. Also note that whenever you treat a tank with antibiotics that damage or kill the bacteria responsible for nitrogen cycle and see a sudden sharp increase in the levels of ammonia in the tank. MM
