Red Carbon

Red Carbon
A carbon resistor has color code black, red, yellow and Gold. What is the tolerance resistance?

i know that the resistance will be 2 x 10^4 ohm +_ 5% but how do you calculate the tolerance?

normally i see these as red-black-orange but 20K is 20K. the tolerance is built in to the manufacturing process.

if you want to know what the range of possible resistances a 20K +-5% resistor can be within, multiply the resistance by the percentage (20000 * .05 = 1000), then add and subtract that value from the resistance (20K +- 1K or 19000 to 21000 ohms).

if you want to find the tolerance of a specific 20K resistor you can either compare it’s measured resistance with that of known tolerance, or apply some known voltage to the resistor, measure the current flow and calculate, but your accuracy will still be restricted in some sense by the accuracy of the measurement system.
