Why ionic compounds dissolve in polar solvents?
Since ionic compounds are most intramolecular bonds (Ionic bond), how they are separated (ionized) by the attraction of some negative charges (intermolecular force) of water? Why why not the water is ionized to become two hydrogen ions and oxygen ion? Since the oxygen atom in a molecule of water can pull the atom hydrogen from another molecule of water, or vice versa … Please clarify
is free energy (delta G). ionic bond is an attraction between positive and negative charges. contains links polor water, oxygen partial negative charge and positively charged hydrogen partial. each ion is surrounded by many many water molecules. all these attractions small sum to the solvation energy (heat release = negative delta H), which is enough to compensate ionic bond energy. Delta G consists of two parts, other than delta H, there are also entropy (delta S). when ionic compounds separate into ions, entropy increases (more positive). delta G = delta H – T * delta S, the most negative delta G, the better the process. Instead of considering a molecule of water by a hydrogen from another molecule of water, see it as an exchange. When a water molecule "pulls" a hydrogen from another molecule of water loses a hydrogen at the same time, exchanges occur very quickly.
Bring the Volt to market, one city at a time
The Chevrolet Volt is the project of General Motors electric car the first of what the car manufacturer expected to be several vehicles share what is now called Voltec platform. Powered by a lithium-ion battery that will go 40 miles on one charge, the Volt also is equipped with a 1.4L I4 engine that will help expand its range.
Volt models most likely to be fed in the homes of owners, but also have access to public ports refurbishing, like a gas pump fuel station, to keep their vehicles running when out of range or take a trip. To this end, General Motors has announced it is working with several partners to lend a hand including several major cities.
"Working with communities as San Francisco and metropolitan areas like Washington, DC – where there is already an interest in plug-in vehicles – is another important step to raise customer awareness of environmental and economic benefits of vehicles like the Volt, "said Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet.
GM has announced it is looking for stakeholders who would be the governments, businesses and civic groups to help facilitate the Volt owners to turn the appliance. These groups may include:
- State, city and county governments
- Hostels Electrical
- Regulators / public service commissions
- Permits and code officials
- Clean Cities coalitions
- local entrepreneurs
- Universities
- The early adopters of electric vehicles
"Cities have a vital role in making plug-in vehicles of success, "said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom." Here in San Francisco, we are acting now to ensure that the allocation of infrastructure will be available to support these vehicles as soon as they are ready for sale, and we are working with other cities in the region to make the area Bay is a thriving market for electric transport. "
GM plans to manufacture the Volt battery packs in the United States and is currently building a plant in Michigan to assemble them. LG Chem, a giant battery of Korea, will supply the cells for the Volt.
Several recent positive developments in this regard are:
- Last October, the federal government approved a $ 7,500 tax incentive for consumers plug-in electric vehicles, such as the Chevy Volt.
- In November, the cities California San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland announced a plan to plug-in vehicle infrastructure, incentives and facilitators.
- A new Michigan law accelerates the development of advanced battery manufacturing and research capacity in the state.
GM also is helping to pave the way for plug-in marketing on several other fronts, including:
In collaboration with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and a coalition of over 40 utilities to meet the challenges and accelerate the commercialization of plug-in vehicles electric.
Playing a leading role in the creation of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standards for vehicle load interface.
"We know that a lot of work still remains, both within and outside of GM," said Peper. "But today's announcement and other recent noted the comprehensive work being done to bring the Chevrolet Volt and other electric drive vehicles on the market – and also underscores why we are so optimistic about the success end of the Volt. "
GM expects the Volt will be first available for sale in November 2010. A tentative price of $ 40,000 has been set for the model.
