Are my hand cramps related to my fountain pen?
I’m left handed, and in year 13, I have been using a fountain pen since year 7, but lately have been getting painful hand cramps and general pains. I do “claw” my hand in a way when i write with it, and I am just wondering if I am doing any long term damage and if i should stop using a fountain pen, despite my love for them.
You Are tending to grip the pen too tightly. Try to relax the grip and generally relax the forearm. I had similar problems when using a screw driver because I was gripping too tightly. Once I learned to relax the problem went away.

Quality Writing by Fountain Pens
Pen is the most common instrument that must be used by almost every person in their routine life. There are many varieties of pens available in the market. A fountain pen is a pen that contains a reservoir of water-based Liquid Ink. From the reservoir or the ink cartridge, the ink is drawn through a feed to the nib and then to the paper via a combination of gravity and capillary action, so most fountain pens require no pressure to write. In short, a pen filled from an external source and containing an ink reservoir that automatically feeds the writing point is called as fountain pen.
The history of fountain pen sounds really interesting because of its utility for varied purposes. The Romanian inventor Petrache Poenaru received a French patent for the invention of the first fountain pen with a replaceable ink cartridge on May 25, 1827. In early 1850s, fountain pen gained much of fame as a Writing Instrument and was seen with some alteration in its specification like iridium-tipped gold nib, hard rubber, and free flowing ink.
In today’s world you will find that nibs are usually made of Stainless Steel or gold (the gold content approximately being 14 karat and 18 karat). And with no doubt gold is considered as the best metal because of its characteristic like resistance to corrosion. Gold nibs are tipped with a hard, wear-resistant alloy that typically uses metals from the platinum group. The nib usually has one slit cut down its center, to convey the ink down the nib by capillary action, as well as a “breather hole” of varying shape to promote the exchange of air for ink in the pen’s reservoir. The whole nib narrows to a point where the ink is transferred to the paper. Nibs divided into three ‘tines’ are commonly known as ‘music’ nibs, as their line which can be varied from broad to fine is suited for writing musical scores. Although the most common nibs end in a round point of various sizes (fine, medium, broad), various other nib shapes are available. Examples of this are oblique, reverse oblique, stub, italic and 360 degree nibs. Other styles of fountain pen nibs include Hooded Nibs (e.g. Parker 51, Parker 61, or Parker 100, Hero 329), Inlaid Nibs (e.g. Sheaffer Targa or Valor) or Integral Nibs (Parker T-1), which may also be ground to have different writing characteristics.
